The Origins of the Emmet County Seal
Assignment:
The County Administrator noted that several versions of the county seal were being used by various departments on letterhead, email signatures and other official documents. He requested that I assist the Emmet County Historical Society in coming up with one version to be approved by the Board of Commissioners and used by County employees going forward.
NOTES:
I researched and located information in the local newspapers archived on the Greenwood Cemetery website. That research revealed that the county seal currently being used on documents had been altered over the years and wasn’t actually the original one. I worked on updating the graphics inside the seal to better match the version on the outside of the county building which was the original seal. With those updated graphics and colors, I created three versions of the seal to be considered. The County Administrator was concerned the Historical Commission and Board of Commissioners would want to know why changes were being made to the seal currently being used and asked that I show why and how I changed it. So, I created a video that was played during a Historical Commission meeting and a Board of Commissioners public meeting. (A PowerPoint/PDF version of the video was also created to go with the County’s legal meeting minutes.) The Historical Commission recommended the County Commissioners approve the version with the blue outer frame and that version of the Emmet County seal is now the official version as of June 2021.
